Print a bank statement
Banks distribute monthly statements as password-protected PDFs for security. Unlock to print a physical copy for your records or to submit to a lender as proof of income.
Password-protected PDFs are common: banks, insurers, government agencies, and employers distribute statements and documents with password protection as a standard security measure. When you need to print, annotate, copy text from, or share one of these PDFs without the password barrier, LuraPDF can remove the protection — provided you supply the password you have the right to use. The entire unlocking operation runs in your browser using pdf-lib. Your PDF and your password never travel over the network.
This tool is designed for document owners. It removes encryption from PDFs where you know the password — bank statements, payslips, tax documents, and template files that were locked for distribution. LuraPDF is not a password cracker. If you do not know the password, this tool cannot help — contact the document sender for the password or request an unprotected copy. Use this tool only for documents you have legitimate access to.
Password-protected PDFs are everywhere. Here are the most common situations where legitimate owners need to remove protection.
Banks distribute monthly statements as password-protected PDFs for security. Unlock to print a physical copy for your records or to submit to a lender as proof of income.
Educational PDFs sometimes restrict text copying to prevent piracy. Unlock a textbook or course material PDF you purchased to copy quotations for study notes or citations.
You received a locked invoice or form template from a vendor. Unlock it to edit the template in your PDF editor or fill in fields that the form designer locked.
Your accountant needs a copy of a password-protected payslip or tax document. Unlock it and send the clean PDF rather than sharing the password with a third party.
Storing password-protected PDFs long-term creates a risk that the password will be forgotten. Unlock documents before archiving to ensure access remains possible in the future.
Many PDFs with owner passwords restrict annotation and editing even though the document can be opened. Unlock to remove those restrictions and annotate, highlight, or edit freely.
Password protection on a PDF you own creates friction in legitimate workflows. Here is what you gain by removing it.
PDF encryption works by encrypting the document's content streams and string data using a key derived from the password. The encryption key is stored in an encrypted form in the PDF's encryption dictionary — alongside a validation hash that allows a PDF reader to verify whether the supplied password is correct. When you click Unlock, pdf-lib reads this encryption dictionary, derives the decryption key from your password, verifies the key against the stored hash, and then decrypts every content stream, font stream, and image stream in the document. The result is a new PDF document object in browser memory with no encryption dictionary.
The entire operation — dictionary parsing, key derivation, stream decryption, and PDF re-serialization — runs in JavaScript inside your browser tab. Your password is used as an input to the key derivation function and is not stored in any form after the operation completes. The browser's garbage collector releases the password string from memory when no longer referenced. Your PDF never travels to any server. This structural privacy guarantee makes LuraPDF appropriate for unlocking sensitive documents like financial records, medical forms, and legal agreements.

Unlocking works smoothly when you understand what the tool does and does not do. These tips prevent surprises.
This tool requires you to know the password — it removes protection that you are authorized to remove. It is not a password cracker.
If you have forgotten the password, contact the original document sender. They can resend the document or provide the password directly.
After unlocking, re-protect the PDF with a new password using the Protect PDF tool if you need to share it with different access controls.
Some PDFs have an owner password (restricts permissions) without requiring a user password to open. Unlocking removes the permission restrictions even if the document appears to open freely.
Always verify that you have the legal right to modify the document before unlocking — check your license agreement or the terms under which the PDF was shared with you.
After unlocking, you can merge, compress, annotate, or convert the PDF using other LuraPDF tools — many of these require an unencrypted input file.
Drop your password-protected PDF into the box above, enter your password, and download an unlocked copy in seconds. Your password and your document stay on your device — nothing leaves your browser. After unlocking, use any other LuraPDF tool — merge, compress, edit, sign — to continue working with your document. All tools work the same browser-only way.
