How LuraPDF unlocks PDF files
PDF encryption works by encrypting the document's content streams and string data using a key derived from the password. The encryption key is stored in an encrypted form in the PDF's encryption dictionary — alongside a validation hash that allows a PDF reader to verify whether the supplied password is correct. When you click Unlock, pdf-lib reads this encryption dictionary, derives the decryption key from your password, verifies the key against the stored hash, and then decrypts every content stream, font stream, and image stream in the document.
