Sign PDF Online — Add Signature to PDF Free

Draw, type, or upload your signature. Position it on any page. No upload, no signup, no DocuSign subscription.

Sign PDF documents — privately, in your browser

The traditional signing workflow is slow: print the document, sign it with a pen, scan it, and email the scan. LuraPDF eliminates every step between receiving and returning a signed PDF. Draw your signature with a mouse or touchscreen, type it in a signature font, or upload an image of your handwritten signature. Position it anywhere on the page, resize it, and download the signed PDF — all in your browser, with nothing uploaded to any server.

Two terms are often confused: an electronic signature (what this tool creates) is a digital representation of your handwritten signature — a positioned image overlay on the PDF. A digital signature (a different concept) uses a cryptographic certificate to prove the signer's identity and detect tampering. E-signatures are legally binding in most jurisdictions under the ESIGN Act (United States), eIDAS (European Union), and equivalent legislation worldwide. For most personal and business signing needs — offer letters, rental agreements, NDAs, expense reports — an e-signature is sufficient. LuraPDF creates e-signatures; it does not create certificate-based digital signatures.

How to sign a PDF online

1

Upload your PDF

Drag your PDF into the drop zone or click to browse. The document is loaded into your browser — nothing is uploaded to a server. Multi-page PDFs are fully supported and you can add signatures to any page.

2

Create your signature

Choose one of three signature modes. Draw: use your mouse or touchscreen to draw your handwritten signature on the signature pad. Type: enter your name and choose a script font that renders it as a signature. Upload: upload a photo or scan of your handwritten signature on white paper.

3

Position and resize

Drag your signature onto the target page and position it exactly on the signature line. Resize it by dragging the corner handles. The signature is a movable overlay — you can reposition it as many times as you like before finalizing.

4

Add date and initials

Add a date stamp with today's date next to your signature. Add initials as a separate, smaller signature element for initialing individual pages or clauses. Multiple signature objects can be placed on the same page or across different pages in a multi-page document.

5

Download signed PDF

Click Save PDF. pdf-lib writes your signature as an image stream on the specified page coordinates and downloads the complete signed PDF to your device. The signature is embedded in the PDF content — it appears in every PDF reader and prints correctly.

100% private

Your PDF and signature are processed in your browser. Nothing is uploaded to a server. Close the tab and all data is freed.

Three signature modes

Draw with mouse or touch, type in a signature font, or upload a scanned signature image. All three modes embed the signature identically in the PDF.

Multi-page signing

Navigate through all pages of a multi-page PDF and place signatures, initials, and dates on any page. Multiple signature objects per document supported.

Reuse your signature

Your drawn or typed signature is saved in browser local storage. On your next visit, your saved signature is available for reuse without redrawing.

Date and initials

Add a date stamp alongside your signature. Add an initials element for initialing individual pages. Both are positioned independently.

Free, no signup

No account, no email gate, no daily quota, no DocuSign subscription. Sign PDFs as often as you need from any modern browser.

Who uses LuraPDF Sign PDF

E-signature removes the friction from returning signed documents. Here are the most common signing scenarios.

Sign an offer letter

HR sends an offer letter as a PDF. Sign it digitally in LuraPDF and email the signed copy back the same day — no printer required.

Sign a rental agreement

Property managers and landlords send tenancy agreements as PDFs. Sign all required signature fields and initials pages, then return the document the same day.

Sign an NDA

Non-disclosure agreements are routinely sent as PDFs before freelance or consulting engagements. Sign and return without printing, scanning, or paying for a DocuSign account.

Sign tax forms

Government tax forms, declarations, and applications often require a signature. Sign the PDF form digitally before submitting electronically or printing for mailing.

Authorize expense reports

Managers and approvers sign expense report PDFs to authorize payments. LuraPDF handles the sign-and-return without requiring an enterprise e-signature platform.

Sign school permission slips

School forms, field trip permission slips, and parental consent documents are often sent as PDFs. Sign and email back instead of printing, signing, and mailing.

Why sign PDFs electronically

Electronic signing eliminates the print-sign-scan cycle. Here is what you gain by signing PDFs digitally.

  • Print-sign-scan-email takes 10-15 minutes and requires a printer and scanner. E-signature takes 60 seconds from any device.
  • Mobile signing means you can return a signed contract from your phone the moment you receive it — no desktop or equipment required.
  • Signed PDFs can be returned the same day they are received — no delay waiting for printer access or postal mail.
  • E-signatures are legally valid in the United States (ESIGN Act), European Union (eIDAS), and most other jurisdictions for everyday business documents.
  • A signed digital PDF is easier to store, search, and retrieve than a physical signed document stored in a filing cabinet.
  • No DocuSign or HelloSign subscription needed for personal and small-business signing volumes — free browser-based signing handles most use cases.

How LuraPDF signs PDF documents

LuraPDF loads your PDF using pdf.js for rendering and displays it in an interactive editor. When you draw a signature on the signature pad, the strokes are captured as SVG path data and rendered to an HTML canvas. When you type a signature, the text is rendered to a canvas in the chosen script font. When you upload a signature image, it is decoded in the browser. In all three cases, the signature is converted to a PNG image stored in browser memory. You then drag this image onto the page at your chosen position.

When you click Save PDF, pdf-lib takes the original PDF and embeds the signature PNG at your specified page coordinates as a PDF image XObject. The signature is written into the page's content stream as a positioned image operator — meaning it is baked into the PDF content, not a floating annotation layer. The resulting PDF is a standards-compliant document where the signature renders correctly in every PDF reader and prints at the embedded image resolution. No server receives any file or signature data at any point in this process.

Tips for signing PDFs effectively

A few habits make signed documents look professional and hold up in professional contexts. Apply these tips.

  1. Tip 1:

Use a tablet stylus or touchscreen for the most natural-looking drawn signature — mouse-drawn signatures can look uneven at small sizes.

  2. Tip 2:

Save your signature in browser storage after drawing it — LuraPDF remembers it so you do not have to redraw for every document.

  3. Tip 3:

For contracts with legal weight, retain a copy of the unsigned PDF alongside the signed version — the original shows what you agreed to.

  4. Tip 4:

For documents requiring legal-grade authentication (mortgage deeds, court filings), use a certificate-based digital signature from a qualified trust service provider — an e-signature image overlay is not the same as a cryptographic digital signature.

  5. Tip 5:

Place the signature precisely on the designated signature line — zoom in using the browser's zoom for accurate positioning on documents with small signature fields.

  6. Tip 6:

After signing, verify that the signature appears correctly by previewing the PDF in the browser viewer before downloading.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is an electronic signature legally binding?
In most cases, yes. In the United States, the Electronic Signatures in Global and National Commerce (ESIGN) Act and the Uniform Electronic Transactions Act (UETA) give e-signatures the same legal standing as handwritten signatures. The European Union's eIDAS regulation recognizes electronic signatures for most commercial and legal transactions. However, some document types — wills, court orders, real estate deeds in certain jurisdictions — may require a witness, notary, or certificate-based signature. When in doubt, check with a legal professional in your jurisdiction.
What is the difference between an e-signature and a digital signature?
An electronic signature (what LuraPDF creates) is a visual representation of your signature embedded in the PDF — a positioned image. A digital signature uses a cryptographic certificate issued by a trusted authority to mathematically bind the signer's identity to the document, and to detect any changes to the document after signing. E-signatures are suitable for most everyday business documents. Digital signatures with certificates are required for high-assurance contexts like qualified electronic signatures under eIDAS Level 2/3.
Is this tool free?
Yes, completely free. No account required, no daily limit, no watermark on the signed PDF. LuraPDF does not charge for any PDF signing functionality.
Can multiple people sign the same document?
LuraPDF is a single-user signing tool. For a document requiring multiple signers, each person runs the tool independently: the first signer downloads the signed PDF and passes it to the next signer, who adds their signature on top. For automated multi-party signing workflows with audit trails, a dedicated e-signature platform like DocuSign is better suited.
Will my signature be saved for reuse?
Yes. Your drawn or typed signature is saved to your browser's local storage. On your next visit to LuraPDF, the saved signature is pre-loaded and ready to place without redrawing. The signature data is stored only in your browser and is never sent to any server.
Can I sign on a phone or tablet?
Yes. The signature pad works with touch input — draw your signature with your finger or a stylus. Tablets with stylus support produce the most natural-looking drawn signatures. Phones are suitable for touch-drawn or typed signatures.
Can I sign a password-protected PDF?
Not directly. Use the Unlock PDF tool first to remove the password protection — you will need to provide the password you own. Then bring the unlocked PDF back for signing.
Can I modify the document after signing?
Yes, with caveats. The signed PDF can be re-opened in LuraPDF and further edits applied. However, editing a signed document changes its content, which undermines the intent of the signature. If the document requires integrity assurance, do not modify it after signing.
Is the output PDF/A compatible?
The output is a standard PDF/1.7 document. PDF/A compliance depends on the source PDF's metadata and structure, not just the signature. If PDF/A compliance is required for archival purposes, validate the output after signing using a dedicated PDF/A validator.
Can I add a stamp and a signature at the same time?
Yes. LuraPDF lets you place multiple objects on the page in a single editing session: a signature, a date stamp, an initials element, and any additional text or image objects. All are written into the PDF simultaneously when you click Save PDF.
